The real reason why we love Garfield

Updated: Dec 9, 2020

We know Garfield as being a slightly overweight and somewhat lazy cat who has a crafty talent with words. He also has a sneaky preference for practical jokes which often leave his owner Jon speechless. If we want to be very rational we can even say that this cat is quite rude with the word.

But we still love him so much. Why?

I would say there are lots of reasons why we can love this sassy, opinionated, lasagna-loving, mailman chasing, sarcastic cat, Garfield.

We can adore him for his unique humor, the relationship he shares with his human, Jon, and the help he has offered in understanding our own felines. But I am pretty sure that most of us, love Garfield for the way he is not afraid to declare his love for food. I think Garfield loves lasagne as much as I love Christmas, as much as Romeo loved Juliet or as much as we want this whole Corona thing to end. Some of his favorite meals include lasagna, hamburgers, doughnuts, and cake. Basically the well-balanced diet of champions.

He orders an average of 50 boxes of his favorite food lasagna a week and eats extra on his birthday. He likes an arrangement of food containing wheat and is known to like Chinese food on occasion. He likes eggplants in lasagnas and pepperoni on pizzas. He usually eats by tossing lasagnas into the air and catching them. He sometimes uses a fork, albeit more rarely. He often orders a large pizza and rolls it up like a taco. He eats with more manners in "Against All Tides".

Oh, what a legend.

Being the obsessive eater he is, Garfield frequently eats Jon's food when he is not looking. Even when Jon is on his guard, Garfield manages to take his food in other, more ingenious ways, such as cutting holes through the table. Other times, when Jon tries to work out a truce with Garfield to stop him from eating his food, Garfield often ignores Jon's offers and eats his food instead. Often times, Garfield even takes Jon's food and adds it to his own cat food.

Does this sound familiar to you, my dear reader?

Well it, does to me. I used to do the same...and please don't lie I am pretty sure you too.

I collected 5 comic strips that best illustrate Garfield's not-so-hidden feelings on food, and I love him even more after compiling the below list.

Enjoy it…
